A water treatment proposal is not complete just because it names the equipment. Before you commit, ask the provider to show you exactly where every component will go and how it will connect to your home.

This matters because the installation location affects more than appearance. It determines whether the system can reach the correct water line, discharge safely, receive power and remain accessible for maintenance. A vague plan can turn into exposed tubing, blocked storage space or extra installation work that was never discussed.

Ask the installer to mark the full footprint

Do not rely on a statement such as “it will go by the water heater.” Ask the provider to identify the proposed location of each tank, filter housing, control valve, salt tank, storage tank, faucet and other component included in the proposal.

Get the equipment dimensions and compare them with the available floor and wall space. Include the room needed to open lids, remove filter sumps and lift out internal parts. A housing may fit between two pipes but still be impossible to service once installed.

If the system includes a salt tank, picture the actual refill process. Check whether a person can carry bags to the tank, open the lid fully and pour without reaching across pipes or appliances. If the route includes stairs, narrow doors or low ceilings, decide whether that location will remain practical.

Identify the water line that will be treated

Ask the provider to point to the exact pipe where the system will connect. Then confirm which fixtures are downstream of that connection.

A whole-house system may need to treat indoor hot and cold water while leaving outdoor faucets untreated. An under-sink system may serve one dedicated faucet, the existing kitchen faucet, an ice maker or some combination. These are different installation plans.

Ask for a simple explanation of what will and will not receive treated water. If the answer is hard to follow, request that the route be marked on a photo or basic plumbing sketch. This can reveal unexpected limitations before walls or pipes are opened.

Trace the drain route from beginning to end

Many treatment systems need a drain connection for regeneration, backwashing or reject water. Ask the provider to show the entire proposed route, not just the point where the tube leaves the equipment.

Check where the discharge will end, how the line will be secured and whether it must cross a walkway or finished area. Ask whether the route depends on drilling through a cabinet, floor, foundation or exterior wall. Confirm that any required air gap or other backflow protection is included in the installation plan.

If the proposal depends on a floor drain, utility sink or standpipe, verify that the installer has inspected it. A nearby drain is not automatically a suitable drain. The provider should account for elevation, distance, discharge rate and the condition of the receiving plumbing.

Confirm the electrical plan

Ask whether the system requires an outlet and whether the proposed outlet is grounded, continuously powered and reachable without an extension cord. Check whether the outlet is controlled by a wall switch that someone could turn off accidentally.

Also ask what happens to the system settings after power is interrupted. Some controls retain programming while others may require the clock or operating schedule to be checked. You should know where the transformer and cord will sit and whether either will interfere with storage, doors or routine cleaning.

Check the environment around the equipment

Water treatment equipment should not be placed where it is likely to freeze, overheat, flood or be struck by vehicles and stored objects. Look above the proposed location for leaking valves, sweating pipes or signs of past water damage. Look below it for uneven flooring or materials that could be damaged by a leak.

If the equipment will be in a garage, crawlspace or unfinished area, ask how it will be protected from temperature extremes and accidental impact. If it will be near a furnace, electrical panel or other appliance, confirm that required working clearances will remain available.

Do not let a new system block access to the main shutoff, sump pump, sewer cleanout, water heater controls or other equipment that may need urgent service.

Plan for routine service, not just installation day

Ask the provider to demonstrate how a technician will reach the valve, controls and replaceable parts. Determine which direction filter housings open, how far tanks must move for service and whether nearby shelving will have to be removed.

For filters that require cartridge changes, check whether a full housing can be lowered without hitting the floor, counter or plumbing below it. For systems with replaceable media, ask how the old material would be removed from the home and how replacement material would be brought in.

The best location is not always the closest open corner. It is the location that keeps the equipment usable for the person who will maintain it.

Find out what installation work is excluded

Ask whether the quoted installation includes pipe changes, shutoff valves, drain fittings, electrical work, wall penetrations, patching and permits if any are required. If another trade must complete part of the preparation, identify who will arrange it and whether the treatment installation depends on that work being finished first.

Also ask who is responsible for moving shelves, stored belongings or appliances. A provider may expect the area to be empty before arrival. That expectation should be clear before the appointment.

Document the agreed location

Take photographs of the proposed equipment area and the planned pipe, drain and electrical connections. Ask the provider to add the location and any special routing to the written proposal or installation notes.

If you are comparing providers, use the same location questions with each one. Different answers may reflect different equipment dimensions, installation methods or assumptions about what the quoted work includes. Before signing, you should be able to answer four practical questions: Where will every component sit? Which water lines will it treat? Where will its drain and power connections go? Can it be maintained without dismantling the surrounding room?

If any answer is still “we will figure that out during installation,” the location has not been planned closely enough. Resolve it while changing the proposal is still easy.
