A water softener installation should involve more than connecting two pipes and adding salt. The installer must confirm where the system belongs, identify which water lines it should treat, provide a reliable drain connection, start the equipment correctly and show you how to operate it.

You do not need to supervise every fitting. You should know what decisions are being made and what evidence shows that the finished system works. Here is what a complete whole-house softener installation should look like from arrival through handoff.

Before the water is shut off

The installer should first review the job with you. Confirm the equipment being installed, the agreed location and which fixtures will receive softened water. If the delivered model or tank size differs from the proposal, stop and ask why before installation begins.

The installer should identify the incoming water service, the main shutoff and the direction of water flow. This matters because a softener installed backward will not operate properly. The crew should also locate the water heater connection, outside faucet lines, irrigation branches and any existing filters.

Ask the installer to explain which lines will remain untreated. Many households prefer to leave irrigation and some outside faucets on hard water. A drinking-water tap may be treated or untreated depending on the household's preference and any other equipment present. Do not assume the piping arrangement matches what was discussed during the sales visit.

The proposed location needs enough room to load salt, remove the control valve, replace the resin tank and reach the bypass. Check the path to the location as well. Narrow stairs, low pipes and finished walls can affect how the tanks enter and whether future service is practical.

The installer should inspect the drain and power options

A softener needs a discharge point for regeneration. The installer should identify that point before cutting the water line. Ask where the drain hose will run, how it will be secured and what prevents wastewater from flowing backward into the equipment.

The drain route should not depend on a loose hose resting near a floor drain or laundry sink. It should be supported, protected from kinks and placed where it is unlikely to be pulled loose. If the route rises or runs a long distance, ask the installer to confirm that the control valve can discharge reliably through that arrangement.

The brine tank also has an overflow connection. Ask where overflow water would go if a fill problem occurred. An overflow fitting is not a substitute for a safe equipment location, but leaving it unconnected can turn a malfunction into water damage.

Most automatic softeners also need power. The outlet should be reachable without an extension cord crossing a walkway or resting near standing water. If the installation depends on an outlet controlled by a wall switch, make sure that switch cannot casually be turned off.

What happens during the plumbing work

Once the layout is confirmed, the installer will shut off the water and relieve pressure from the plumbing. The incoming line is then cut so the softener can be placed in the correct sequence with any sediment filter, carbon filter or other treatment equipment.

The completed piping should include a usable bypass arrangement. Ask the installer to point out the normal service position and the bypass position. You should be able to isolate the softener if it leaks or needs repair while still restoring water to the house.

Look at how the pipes and valves are supported. The home's plumbing should not be hanging from the softener connections, and the control valve should not be carrying the weight of long pipe runs. Flexible connectors should not be sharply bent, twisted or rubbing against a hard edge.

If bonding wires or other electrical connections are present on the original metal water line, ask whether the plumbing changes affect them. The installer should not remove or relocate such connections without addressing their purpose.

Startup should be controlled, not rushed

After the connections are complete, the installer should place the softener in bypass and restore the household water carefully. This allows the new plumbing joints to be checked before water enters the treatment tank.

The installer should inspect every new connection under pressure. Watch for moisture around fittings, valve stems, the bypass and the control head. A dry paper towel passed beneath a connection can reveal a slow seep that is difficult to see on a damp pipe.

Water should then be introduced into the softener according to the equipment's startup procedure. Opening a valve too quickly can disturb treatment media or send air and debris through the plumbing. The installer may run water at a nearby fixture until air and initial discoloration clear.

The control valve must be programmed for the household and water conditions. Ask what hardness setting was entered and what test or water report supports it. If iron is part of the water problem, ask how that affected the setup and maintenance instructions. The display should also show the correct operating mode and remaining capacity information used by that particular controller.

The first regeneration is part of installation

The installer should verify that the unit can move through its regeneration cycle. That does not mean you must stand through every minute of a complete cycle, but the important functions should be checked.

Confirm that water reaches the drain without leaking, spraying or backing up. The drain hose should remain secure when flow begins. The installer should also verify that the brine tank fills as intended and that the system can draw water from it during the appropriate cycle.

Listen for unusual vibration and look for water escaping around the control valve or drain fittings. A strong discharge into a floor drain can expose a slow or partially blocked household drain, so check the surrounding area rather than looking only at the softener.

How the installer should verify the result

A proper handoff includes a water check, not just a leak check. The installer should draw water from a fixture that is definitely downstream of the softener and test it after the system has been placed in service and the line has been flushed.

Ask to see the result and where the sample came from. Testing an untreated outside faucet tells you about the incoming water, not whether the new softener is working. If the treated result is not what the installer expected, the cause should be investigated before the job is considered complete.

Also test normal household operation. Run a faucet while checking for a severe pressure reduction. Confirm that toilets refill, the water heater supply is open and any filter housings disturbed during the work remain dry.

The handoff you should receive

Before the crew leaves, have the installer show you how to place the system in bypass, start a manual regeneration and adjust the basic settings. You should know what the display looks like during normal service and what an error or loss of power may look like.

Ask what type of salt the company recommends, where to add it and how high the tank should normally be filled. More salt is not always more useful. You need enough room to see whether salt is bridging or whether water is standing unusually high in the tank.

Request the model and serial information, the equipment manual, warranty terms and the installer's startup settings. Keep a written record of the hardness setting, regeneration basis and any untreated plumbing branches. These details make later service calls more efficient.

Ask who handles warranty labor, who supplies replacement parts and what maintenance the homeowner is expected to perform. If the installer recommends a future service visit, the reason should be tied to a specific inspection, cleaning or test rather than a vague tune-up.

Do a final walk-through before signing

Walk the entire work area with the installer. Check the supply connections, bypass, drain hose, brine overflow, electrical cord and floor around both tanks. Make sure removed pipe, packaging and spilled resin or salt have been cleaned up.

Photograph the finished piping and control settings for your records. Then confirm that the invoice identifies the equipment actually installed and notes any changes from the original scope.

Do not accept an unexplained leak, unsecured drain line, inaccessible bypass or missing startup test as a minor detail. Those items are part of the installation itself. A sound installation ends with a system that treats the intended water, regenerates safely and can be understood and isolated by the homeowner.
